Even though I shoot with a 1Dsmk2 and a 5D, I still yearn for an Olympus camera. I use to own the Olympus E420 and a few quality lenses. It is the size and innovation that interests me, ever since Olympus announced the MicroFT standard, it was only a question of time when they would release a rangefinder type camera. I think the market needs that capability, not everybody needs to shoot with a large SLR, and Leica is never going to fill that space. My dream camera would be a digital Contax G2, but that isn’t likely for the foreseeable future.
This announcement is great news and the camera’s abilities are incredible for something that big. My only complaint is the lens lineup at the moment and the lack of some fast primes. But overall it is a new system, and I’ll be keeping my eye on it.

At some point I’ll get myself a proper website, for now, I’ve created another blog (I have 4 as of now) as it enables me to share my images to those I photograph, and to those who stumble across it. This blog is about car culture, at the moment I am photographing a group who meet up in Swansea city center. The idea behind the project is to create an awareness, there being different sub-cultures within car culture. It isn’t just about Boy Racers and making loud noises, though you would think it was with all the media attention focused on them, because that is all we’re presented with. My aim is to show something else.
I’m always interested in photographers rights here in the UK and across the world. Here are a few interesting links:
- Who’s a Journalist, Who isn’t? – ‘On Monday Commander Broadhurst, head of public order at the Metropolitan Police spoke at the NUJ Photographers Conference and with all the events over the past few years he received a rather frosty response from those there. The Commander was heckled off the platform as he began to question the legitimacy of those carrying press cards. He asked in his speech, probably rhetorically but received some very pointed answers’. (It is a short article with 2 interesting audio clips from the discussion.)
- The man who beat Big Brother: Police told they can’t keep pictures of arms trade activist.
- Why has policing in Britain gone so mad?
I’m a fan of Emma Critchley’s work, and a lovely person who I met last year. There is a link on the blogroll to her site, but I’ve come across this video interview where she briefly discusses her new work, as she has been shortlisted for this year’s BJP Project Award.

Again the police in the UK are doing stupid things with the aim of ‘preventing terrorism.’ I’ve included this choice quote, from the Guardian article:
“I will be raising it with the commissioner. I have already written to him about the police taking away cameras and stopping people taking photographs and made the point that if it was not for people taking photos, we would not know about the death of Ian Tomlinson or the woman who was hit by a police officer.”
I wouldn’t put this forward as a good argument from trying to dissuade police officers either. I’m sure the police don’t want these incidents being recorded either. What needs to happen is the removal of that particular law, otherwise officers are going to keep abusing it.
Please note, that under UK law, a police officer will need a court order that would legally enable them to delete a person’s images from their camera, it is classed as assault otherwise. In any case if it is seen as incriminating evidence in the first place, then it shouldn’t be deleted should it?

It has been a while since my last post, but I have been busy, and here are some updates to show I’m still around.
I regularly visit a photography forum called ‘Lightstalkers,’ it is a website for photographers by photographers and there are sometimes some interesting discussions. I’ve highlighted a few:
- Recommended Boots, which do you wear?
- Leica M8- field test. – On a personal note, I would love a full frame digital rangefinder, not necessarily from Leica though, just something smaller than the gear I use at the moment.
- Least expensive photo website?
Here is also a link to a Danish photography competition where the photographer was disqualified for manipulating his entry. Could be the start of an interesting debate about digital manipulation and what a raw file is supposed to represent. To me it looks like all he did was over saturate the colours, and try to get everything exposed properly, to me normal techniques from the darkroom.

The Sunglasses, and the gloves remind me of a movie star with her trademark pose, but not sure who.
